about this story

It all started that one warm Saturday afternoon, when Mama walked away to buy grapefruit. That's when the stranger walked up to me and gave me that weird face-painting. "Do not wash it off," she instructed, "and come back next Saturday." Then she walked away... and when I went to look for Mama, she was gone too. That's where the boarding school came in.
When Mama never came back, I didn't know if I was relieved or afraid. When Papa disappeared last year I was angry. I am afraid of what Mama would say if she found out I let the old hag paint my face, without protest. But now I have no protector from my enemy. I'm always afraid I will run into her again, but I never do. Come to think of it, the only time that I remember seeing the hag was when she painted my face. I've never taken it off since, giving me a creepily demented look. A run-down brick building, covered in graffiti, is my protection from the big bright beautiful world.
And then an official-looking seal on a wooden door changed everything.
"Alright Clancy! Take the boys and surround the house! We need this craphole as our new HQ for-" the speaker hesitated, "for- you know, the topic."
