about this story

As the sun began to rise and shine down into the narrow valley, the shadows of the Blue City cast long towers across the cold ground. I knew the day had begun, but the morning chill defeated any inclination I had in trying to wake. When the light finally reached my eyes I could no longer keep them closed, heavy though they were. They adjusted quickly and I realized I had fallen asleep in the graveyard just outside the city. I looked down at the rock that rested on the small plot of dirt before me. My father, once a great warrior king, had been reduced to this? A whispered conversation piece, a memory of a memory ... another name on another list in another book. I suppose even kings are eventually forgotten. I read the words aloud, one last time.
"But be like the rock,
Steadfast, true, and strong.
Yet cheerful and kind,
And firm against wrong."
