The memory of her face haunted him, so that his eye turned inside out and saw only the past. She had been miraculously gifted at the art of self-invention, but who was she now? His heart was like a flag made of bullets for a country without a heart. What was the point, really, of decorating an empty room with small lights, when only lizards moved across the countryside?
