The candles flickered, gently bouncing off the dark walls. The silence seemed to scream harsher words than any multitude could utter. Alone stood the preacher, who gazed sorrowfully and pitifully at the cold, wooden box below him. The coffin was escorted down the church stairs to the cemetery, a slow procession witnessed by none. Every scoop of earth heaved on the coffin seemed like the indifferent pound of a judge's gavel, sealing the fate of one already forgotten.
