My feet pad across hard pavement, brushing over bits of detritus when my nose tells me to duck into the lot the alley. This is my territory. Past the lot to the edge of the city where the concrete gives way to gravel, the gravel gives way to grass and I know just a few miles on is the sweet smelling farmland. My territory does not extend to the old farmhouse...yet. Even further still I can smell the ocean and long for sand beneath my toes and the salt of ocean but each day I can only roam so far and claim so much as mine. Cans of tuna and bags of kibble hold me fast to the city but I still roam, past the lot towards the trees. Claiming more as my territory I am confident until....a stealthy predator, coiled just so in the bark of a fallen tree informs me that, no, this is not my territory after all.
I think I hear the sound of a can opener....
