about this story

She ducked down behind an abandoned van when she saw the cop in an attempt to sneak past. She knew what she was doing would get her into huge trouble, but she didn't want to accept that it was wrong. In her mind, it wasn't. It never had been and it never would be. The building was shut down and abandoned anyway. Nothing had been there since sometime in the 90s. No one would be using it for anything any time soon, or ever for that matter. She continued to sneak, crouched and almost on her knees. Past the house with the old wooden fence, past the record store, past the old building with the tiny spray-painted graffiti of the ballerina that she always knew as a landmark. When she finally reached the old, elegant, baby blue gates with the chipping paint, she pulled the pick from her pocket. When she got it open she stepped inside for what was probably the hundredth time, but still she marveled. The art museum; the old abandoned building that, for years, had been her getaway. She opened the door and climbed the four flights of stairs approaching her favorite room. It was pitch dark, as always, and she reached for the small lamp resting on the table. She picked it up and carried it around the room, admiring the paintings that hung on the wall- the start to her adventure, her daily dose of inspiration. Then, her feet carried her back to the lone table where the lamp had first rested, her daily routine continued. She found the chair without illumination of the lamp, knowing it was still in the same place. Without hesitation, she sat and pulled out her sketchbook. She tapped her pencil on the desk, waiting for the next page to be filled by the thoughts that consumed her mind and influenced her emotion. She hummed a familiar tune, the same one she had hummed months ago when she first ran here crying, and she drew.
