about this story

I should've never went into that house. That dreaded, foreboding, abandoned house. It was a mistake. A mistake a regret ever having to make. The thing about childhood curiosity is, you never allow judgement into your thought process. You never pay any mind to the rusted "No Smoking Beyond This Point" sign. When we first saw that lifeless sign, we ended up poking at it, like a scientist poking at a frog after operating at it. Nothing special for any real entertainment that would hold our 10 year old attention span, so we pressed on, climbing the fence and walking to the front entrance of the abandoned building. The walls were in near complete decay, the sign left on for so long that the rust formed the shapes of the company name. We took no chances as we all agreed to collect rocks and throw them through two windows on each floor to make sure the entire place was empty. As if anything couldn't have screamed at us louder to turn and run as fast as we could, the bones of of the dead animals and leftovers from the dinner of local coyotes in our area were littered around the dumpster near the back of the building. They had been there for sometime before we came about with the smell engulfing our nostrils like the smell of garbage before it's taken outside. Ignoring the smell somehow, the three of us continued to walk forward through the creaking doors into the dark emptiness inside with my two friends going inside first. Before it was my turn, however, me being the most terrified to be there, the sound of a twig snapping on a pile of leaves startled me and I turned to face whatever that could've been behind me. Before I could even think of moving inside that building, the door slammed between us, cutting me away from my friends. I could hear their screams of fear coming from inside as I tried to get the door open but something from the inside locked the door and nothing I could've done would move it. I didn't know what else to do but run and call for help. The police conducted a few days search and investigation but no trace of another person, nor my two friends were found. No shirt, no footprints that didn't belong to my friends, no trail leading out the back to symbolize a kidnapping. Nothing was left. That was 23 years ago and to this day I still don't know what was inside that took my friends. But I never went back. I never plan to. Although I have to drive past the building everyday on my way to work. I could swear I saw something in one of the windows, some...creature watching me intensely as I passed by. I don't know what you are, I don't know who you are. But you won't ever see me around you again.
