The Shark milled through the murky waters, dangerously close to shore. Dangerous, that was, to the sailors who had just docked their ship and were paddling in the shallows.
Meanwhile, in the lifeguard control room, John was desparately trying to fix the air-conditining. Instead of getting cooler, the room was getting hotter. In fact, it wasn't far off 100 " centigrade. And this on a boiling hot summer's day.
John sighed. Apart from the sailors, who had arrived just now, there had been no one on the beach that day. But a lifeguard still has to keep watch, even on a slow day. Just as he was about to fix the air con, he heard an almighty chorus of shouts, screams and cries. It was as if the sky had turned black and Armageddon had come.
John rushed to the huge window that encircled the control booth and gave him a 360 degree view of the beach. No, no it couldn't be. But it was. A great white heading fast towards shore and the sailors. The cries were coming from the sailors themselves, who were struggling to swim to shore, and from spectators on the cliffs who were screaming in frustration and fear.
For a moment their cries were drowned out by a giant coca cola lorry barrelling along the road which bordered the beach. But it gave John and idea. He knew Sharks, having worked with them as a conservationist, and he knew there was one thing that disturbed them more than anything. And that, bizarrely, was being hit on the nose.
Quick as a dart, he ran outside, flagged down the van, and sprinted down to the shore carrying a huge crate of coke. Once at the shore he did the only thing he could. He started lobbing coke cans at the shark, which was now only yards away from the flailing sailors. The first two cans were wide of the mark and got nowhere near the target. But the third, the third...was a direct hit! The shark thrashed its head from side to side and its tail in the water. But still it pursued its course. So John lobbed the whole crate at it. The crate caught the shark right on the side of its nostrils and that was it. A fury seemed to possess it, it thrashed more than ever and this time it lifted its vast neck and jaws right out of the water, clearly in pain and confusion.
And then, at last, it turned on its tail...and disappeared back into the murky depths, back, John fervently prayed, to the deep waters where it belonged. Later John sat waiting for the bus to take him home. There was an old man with a rucksack sitting on the bench. "Okay day at work?" he enquired in friendly tones.
John thought as the whole nightmarish scene played through his mind again. "Yeah, not too bad," he said, chuckling. "But I'm hoping more happens tomorrow."
