In August, I decided to focus on mentorship for my FedEx project. As I started to investigate mentorship in education, I kept thinking of these question: What are the qualities of effective mentors? How do others lift us up when we need help? How do embody things our mentors helped us with when we help others? What were the components that gave us as educators sturdy roots? All of these questions led to research as well as PD toolkit in a Special Inquiry Project that could serve as a model for our returning teachers.
After months of working on this off and on, I was ready to try it out with returning teachers at a February regional meeting. My team graciously gave me 90 minutes for the workshop, and I was feeling super nervous to deliver this. I think the nerves came from the fact that I'd invested so much time into creating this, that I felt it had to be good or people would wonder why I had wasted so much time. I also was trying some new tech tools, so I worried those wouldn't work as planned.
As the PD unfolded, teachers dove into the small group collaboration that was crucial to investigating the qualities of effective mentors. They shared ideas and stories of people who had mentored them. As I'd feared, there were some hiccups with the technology and what I thought would happen with my Menti word cloud didn't happen. However, rather than freaking out, I went with it and people were still able to share the qualities they had brainstormed.
Toward the end of the PD, teachers were invited to share their stories. After some explanation, some teachers zoomed away to record short videos about their mentors. Others stayed in the room to continue brainstorming and drafting. Throughout the PD, I noticed how eager people were to share the stories of those they had worked with, to laugh about moments and also get a little choked up by some memories.
The feedback was positive and in doing a little Q&A session, I was able to share some of the purposeful moves I'd made. The feedback during and after the PD also helped me do some fine-tuning of the agenda and slides so I could finalize the toolkit to upload to the Idaho Coaching Network website and share with teachers as a mentor text for their Special Inquiry Projects.
