about this story

The fuzz was hot on my tail. Innocent until proven guilty counted for nothing in this town, not if McCormick wanted you silenced. I found sanctuary in the only place I thought I could trust. Father Mike let me sleep in a pew that night, along with some other guys down on their luck in a different way. Someone must have tipped them off, but I hid under the floorboards, and eventually worked my way to the back of the annex where I had to climb out an old window that hadn't been opened since the Pope was Polish. I lost myself in a Mardi Gras parade that luckily was streaming by just as I caught the main drag. I grabbed a mask and a trumpet from a jazz afficionado who was tossing his cookies in a dumpster, and marched with the saints until I scored a ride out of town with a blonde who had nothing to lose.
