about this story

I've heard it said you can never go home again. I never understood that until now. Even the places that are still the same don't look the same. You see them from a different angle now. Maybe you're taller, maybe time has shifted your perspective. I remember the joy I used to get when I saw the giant cone on the sign at Carl's. Now that sign brings nothing from me. I'm frozen inside. I've made myself that way. I have to go to the church. I've come this far I tell myself, I have to go all the way. I have to confront the past or it will own my future. I find the corner we used to meet at. The dorms are unchanged with time, but they look more sinister now. I find the wall out back. Unbelieving, my eyes see the loose brick is still there. Willing myself to move I try to pull it from it's place and it sticks at first, but then with a grating sound it slides out and I see the familiar hiding spot as if time has stood still these 30 years. I reach inside and my fingers find the metal. It's still there.
