about this story

My west-facing front door is not privy to the impending sunrise, so I swivel around my porch post and decline a few steps to street level, then turn. The garden two houses down my side street confirms the advent of a new day, as the dew drops puddle on the leaves. Continuing on, I approach the stone wall, offering a familiar view of the town below framed by the Appalachians, and for but a minute, I believe that all is well with the world. Then glancing back from whence I came, I see Mrs. Johnson. I know not her first name, as she is far too proper to consider it. She is blowing bubbles. Through the big bubble about to burst on her wand, I see a distorted version of a street I know well. Only the closed doors seem clear. I anxiously await the bubble's explosion; I wish I could shake the blurred vision that accompanies living through the pandemic.
