Five Card Story: Empty town

about this story
The man in his apartment awoke in his apartment, confused as to why the sun wasn't shinning through his window. That was, until he looked outside. It was oddly foggy, like nothing he'd seen before, though nothing to worry over, he thought while getting dressed for work.
It was shockingly cold and quiet outside, the water in the air was beginning to form frost around his car, and there was no one else, not only in the lot of his apartment, but the apartment itself it seemed.
Confused as to why the normally bustling city was now quiet enough to hear a pigeon flutter by, he assumed seeing as even they were gone upon taking a look outside the parking building.
The city was completely barren of any sign of life, human or animal.
With hesitation he slowly left the building to investigate where anyone could have gone.
Around a block or two down the street he changed his view, instead looking down at which point he noticed the manhole cover, thick smoke billowing out, and a strange sound.
