about this story

I went for a walk through the city. I didn't often go for walks. Too many buildings. Too many people. But there was somewhere I wanted to go. As I walked, I looked around. The buildings and small plants were perfect. Straight out of a picture and into real life kind of perfect. It was strange. Especially after all that time in my house, watching reruns of old nature shows. I miss nature. I looked forward again and just barely dodged a sign. It said to turn around. But I kept going. I needed to. As I walked, the scenery started to change. From perfect buildings to crumbling buildings. There was graffiti on one. A little girl reaching upward. And then the buildings turned to plants. I had officially left the city behind. Nature was more beautiful up close. I reached out my hand toward a leaf. It's been so long. I plucked the leaf and held it up to my face. It had a sweet smell. Working it's magic and calming my nerves. I saw a small reptile moving out of the corner of my eyes. It lied down on a rock and looked up at me. I put the leaf in my pocket and kept going. After a while of walking, I came across a clearing. Int the middle of the clearing was an old run down house. And next to it, a beautiful statue. One I hadn't seen in a long time. It was a deer, or maybe a reindeer. I had never payed much attention when I was younger. I came up to the statue and stroked it, as if it was real. "I'm home, old friend," I whispered to it. I swear I could feel it's joy, even though it was just a statue. But even if it that joy wasn't real, I was still the happiest I'd ever been since I left.
