René Descartes was obsessed to know what we know for certain from everything we have learned. To achieve this, Descartes he took everything he thought he knew and then tried to figure out what he knew for certain. What Descartes discovered was frustrating because he couldn't actually prove anything. He figured out that because we experience the world exclusively through our senses and our senses at times deceive us, it is impossible for us to prove or even know anything, and everything we think we know is only built upon varying levels of belief, even starting to doubt whether he was actually awake or dreaming.
Nevertheless, Descartes kept at it then he finally came up with one solitary fact that he could unabashedly announce and he knew for certain without any room for even the slightest possibility of doubt: It was that he existed. He defended this conclusion with the argument that for him to be asking questions about existence, something must exist in order to ask the question, or simply, his most famous argument: COGITO ERGO SUM (I think, therefore, I am)
