about this story

They say that you don't know the value of a moment until it becomes a memory. But what they don't tell you is how quickly the moment will pass you by. The nostalgia creeps in as I walk up the front stairs of our childhood home. Many moments took place on those stairs. Moments that quickly turned memories. On the hottest days of summer, you could find us on the steps with watermelon stained cheeks and sidewalk chalk covered overalls. As we got older, those stairs became a place for gossiping with friends until sunset. Passersby would shake their heads at the giggles and shrieks. The only pet our parents ever allowed was a stray kitten we found sleeping there in the dead of winter. As we celebrate Christmas this year with children, kittens, and front porch stoops of our own, it's impossible not to reminisce on the moments of the past. Some of the greatest gifts I've ever received were simple moments on the steps.
