I was knee high to a grasshopper back in those days- before planes flew into buildings and tennis shoes contained bombs. That was a simpler time- an era of innocence when a boy could swim in the pond without worrying his mom to a nervous breakdown. Then it all changed. Pollutants from the war factories contaminated our air. Churches, puppets of the right-wing regime, moved underground so as not to offend the politically correct. Corporations bought up the farmlands and began churning out processed foods, scorched with pesticides since the dismemberment of the FDA. We are an empty people now- a shell of our former selves. First they washed our minds, then removed our hearts. We were once called Americans. We were once the people in the land of the free. We were once the home of the brave. That was a simpler time. I long to run and jump in the cool pond on my family's farm.
