about this story
The story begins by looking up. There are brick walls reaching, always reaching, and the faintest hint of light. The main character begins to walk. He passes brick buildings, skyscrapers really, all reaching up to crowd out the sky. There is no one in the streets, except in front of a coffee shop a man sits on a wooden bench. He is waiting, but the main character does not stop to ask what for. He continues on through the city, searching for something- anything more. He passes more brick buildings. Maybe he goes through an alley lined with trash bins. The smell is overwhelming and he continues further on. He passes a school, or perhaps the town hall. More brick. Everything is brick. But now there are trees, dead things that are still striving, reaching for the sun. And finally, finally, there is the sun, gleaming over a brick sidewalk, ready to lead our character home.
