The dog was free.
No longer tied to the hitch outside of the cafe, he trotted down the sidewalk. It was a beautiful, quiet morning, and although the weather was nice, there were no other humans to stop him from his adventure. First, he cut into the woods, where he explored the many new smells and sounds. After an hour or so of chasing squirrels, he found a back path that led into town. Wandering along the manmade walls, he wandered if this momentary escape was something that should become permanent; his glimpse of the wild was freeing, somehow. But as he continued along, absently following a scent, his mind drifted to the past. He remembered that morning, snuggling in bed with his baby human, the little boy petting over his ears and giggling at him. That boy wasn't in the woods -- and the dog found that, alone in the street, his yearning for his family overtook the need to explore. So, with a hurried gallop, he headed towards home, eager to jump back into the boy's arms.
