One evening during my annual summer vacation, I was walking along the beach and came across a bottle that contained a secret message. Upon opening it, there was an inspirational message that said, "Knowledge is power, and with it, you can change the world!" It was at that point that I felt like this was a sign from above that I needed to continue my education at VCU in a doctoral program... after all, I wanted to change the world! After being at the orientation that was held on campus and hearing all of the requirements for the program, I immediately realized that I needed to find a range of coping strategies to help through all of the stress I would soon be experiencing. So, naturally, I headed to the liquor store to pick my poison for some of the evenings ahead! I knew after a long morning of navigating traffic around campus to find a parking spot and trying my best to avoid getting a parking ticket, I would need something like that by the time I got home in the evening to settle my nerves! No matter the stress, I know that by the end of this program, I will be the first in my family to get a doctorate, not to mention the first to have even attended college. It would all be worth it to prove the odds wrong in the end!
