I was raised as a Christian. I have been going to church for most of my life and feel that having a religious foundation has been a big benefit to my life. Individuals in cultures across the globe and through history have benefited from religion.
Picture #2 - Example
In this age of technology many people have "social" media at their fingers but can still lonely or isolated. A person could have a hundred Facebook friends but no one near in the time of adversity. People in religious circles can find community and meaningful relationships with others who share their views. I would rather have a friend in a church whom I can connect with and share common ground with.

Religion can also give people hope. In a world where bad news is common and it often feels like life could take a turn for the worse at any moment, religion can give people the hope of light in a seemingly dark place. It often gives hope especially in the uncertainty of death and what is afterwards.

On the other hand, religion has also caused many wars and death, like religious extremists killing innocent people and historical events like the religious crusades where many died. It seems that many graveyards have probably been filled by people who fought for their religion or died for the advancement of someone else's religion.

Being religious, I have benefited from religion first hand. And while their are many positive aspects of religion like a sense of community or hope and reassurance in a constantly changing world full of unknowns and even negative aspects like conflicts and power struggles, the most important thing to remember is that it is also constant process of growth like plants that are lush from being watered and fed.
