about this story

Serena Douglass, an investigative journalist for the Times Times sought to singlehandedly resolve a cold case that was recently reopened due to newly discovered evidence. Along with other reporters, she waited outside of the courtroom as the defendant and their attorneys bustled out of the courtroom, attempting to avoid answering any questions.

According to police reports, at some point during the first week in December, a hiker happened upon an old knife along his journey and turned it into the police station. A very heavy snow had inundated the crime scene since the hiker's visit, but Serena chose to visit anyway. While there, she noticed what seemed like co-conspirators meeting and discussing the cold case. They spotted Serena and immediately began chasing her. They eventually catch up to her and take her hostage. Incidentally, her boss Elliot calls her to give her an update on the case. Of course Serena didn't answer, as her phone was confiscated by the kidnappers.

After about 48 hours of not seeing or hearing from Serena, Elliot started to get worried, but chose to wait until their journalist meeting to share his concern. After their meeting agenda was over Elliot brought up the fact that he hadn't heard or seen from Serena in almost a week. He was dismissed by his peers who largely felt like Serena was a troublemaker and got herself into something that maybe she couldn't get herself out of.

Elliot was determined to find Serena and solicited help from some of his colleagues to ping her phone to see where she or at least her kidnappers could be. After several hours, they finally got a signal, and it brought them to a rowhouse with a ladder out front. The door was wide open and Elliot could see straight through the house from the front to the back.

As he stood nervously on the sidewalk he asked himself, "Serena, what have you done?"
