about this story

There was always something going on with us... or so we thought! After a long work week, we realized our Saturday was completely open, so we decided on an impromptu day trip heading west to Charlottesville, VA.

Eager to do something just for us, we packed an overnight bag (just in case), filled up the truck, and hit the road early that morning. We chose Charlottesville because it was close enough for a day trip and offered charming historical buildings and plenty of thrift shops—my favorite. On our way, we passed Richmond and saw a sign for VCU. I was tempted to suggest stopping by the bookstore for a shirt but decided to stick with the plan to explore Charlottesville early.

The two-hour drive left us hungry by the time we arrived, so we found a local favorite for a mid-morning brunch. With full tummies, we set off to explore some of the city. We spent most of the day walking around, enjoying the sights. Eventually, we saw a lady sitting on a bench, and it hit us; we were hot and tired. That’s when we decided to stay overnight at a charming, restored hotel downtown that we had passed earlier. Staying there was perfect. The hotel was within walking distance of restaurants, shops, and UVA’s campus. After a delicious dinner, we enjoyed a relaxing stroll back to the hotel as the sun set.

We saw, we experienced, and we conquered Charlottesville. We turned an unplanned day into a cherished memory. So, what’s the point of my story? Enjoy life! By staying open to possibilities and with a little logistical planning, you can have a memorable day trip, too.
