about this story
When I leave Nelson, I'll have to find a home for my mini- fridge. I'll remember the times it held lunches, energy drinks, and breastmilk. I'll fondly remember James, who used to ask, "Is the deli open today?" when I'd unpack a week's worth of turkey, cheese, and bread on Mondays. When I leave Nelson, I'll be halfway through this semester. I hope to have learned some skills that will help my Formative Assessment presentation. When I leave Nelson, they'll put a lock on the snack locker. "We can't feed the staff, too", they'll say. "These snacks are only for the doctors". I'll feel sad, because snacks should be shared with any clinicians who need an energy boost. When I leave Nelson, I'll have to gift some of my plants to friends. I'm trying to keep them alive long enough to give away in early-July. When I leave Nelson, I will leave behind fond potluck memories. I'll remember the time I shared Friendsgiving with the residents, and they shared my baby's gender reveal with me. The turkey, stuffing, pies, green bean casserole, a football full of blue confetti, the whole shabang. Nelson was the best of times and the worst of times.
