about this story

Joe found himself sitting on a bench outside a local restaurant after work. He didn't quite know where he wanted to go or what he wanted to do. Joe wasn't ready to face the fact that it was his birthday. At home, his family was preparing for a small party, but he wasn't up for a celebration. Joe decided to go for a walk through his town. He stopped to look at the graffiti marked walls, which were a reminder of his past that he couldn't escape. Joe took the time to read the various markings in efforts to extend his walk home. About halfway to his house, Joe ran into a young teen taking photos. He asked if he could capture a few pictures of Joe for his school project. At first, Joe was annoyed, but he agreed anyway. He asked Joe why he looked down and didn't smile for the pictures. Joe explained that it was his birthday and that he didn't have a lot of good memories from his birthday in the past. The boy looked at Joe quietly, thinking, and then said "Your birthday doesn't always have to be bad, you should start making new memories, maybe this year will be the best birthday." He smiled, thanked Joe for helping with the photos and walked away. Joe continued on his journey home He thought about what the boys said and decided to try to be more positive. When he arrived at his house he found that the family had decorated the front door with Birthday signs. Joe walked into the house and immediately was greeted by his children. They were excited to see him and jumped into his arms. His wife was in the kitchen icing up his favorite cake. Joe realized in that moment that he was ready to move on from the past and start enjoying the present. His family set up a night full of fun, which ended with a fire and s'mores in the backyard. Joe went to bed happy to start another year of his life. That next morning he went to check the mail and found a set of printed pictures labeled "Hope you had a great birthday". When he opened the photos he found that the boy had followed him home and taken photos of the birthday decor outside. An even better surprise was the last photo, an image of Joe with his family, smiling.
