It all started when I found a dusty old letter in my grandfather’s desk. He had passed away years ago, and we were cleaning out his things when I came across it. The letter was written in shaky handwriting and mentioned a “place beyond the hills where answers lie.” I didn’t know what it meant at first, but something about it stuck with me.
A week later, I visited the small graveyard on the edge of town. One of the pictures in the letter matched a tombstone there—an old, worn stone sitting in the middle of a grassy field. It was surrounded by a white fence, and the name on it had almost faded. On the stone was a strange symbol: a tree with twisting roots. That’s when I knew this was the first clue.
I took a trip through the countryside, watching the land change as I rode past green fields and faraway hills. The sky stretched endlessly above, and everything felt peaceful but mysterious like something big was waiting just over the horizon. As we passed a large truck marked “A-Z,” I thought about how everything has a beginning and an end and maybe this journey would help me find both.
The bus dropped me off near a forest trail. I hiked up rocky hills, climbing higher and higher until the clouds hugged the mountain. From the top, I could see the mist rolling in, covering the trees below like a soft blanket. It was quiet, except for the wind and the occasional bird call. It felt like the world had paused.
In the forest, I wandered until I came across a tall tree with carvings in the bark just like the symbol on the grave. I traced the lines with my fingers and felt a strange connection, like I was touching a memory that didn’t belong to me. It was then I realized this journey wasn’t about finding treasure or solving a mystery. It was about understanding where I came from.
My grandfather had walked this path long ago. And now, so had I.
