about this story

One day, a grad student was minding their business and reading some books. They were so engrossed with their studies that they didn’t notice that the house became sentient, yet bored. “I would like to take an adventure,” the house said. Inside, the unassuming grad student believed that houses stay put, as they topically do, and this researcher had no evidence that houses move. However, when they noticed gentle rocking as they read, and peered outside the window, they realized they were already traveling across the Monitor-Merrimack bridge-tunnel. The student felt multiple strong feelings at once. Terror, shock, amazement, and ultimately kicking themselves for being unaware that houses could get bored. The graduate student convinced the house that they should spend the day in historic Jamestown, where they watched children fit themselves in a canoe and the house compared itself to the ships in size and comfort levels. Both grad student and house enjoyed their day, as they both learned new things!
