Five Card Story: A place beyond the window

Gini, a black cat, had been staring out the window since yesterday with terrifying eyes.
There was a reason for that look. A long time ago, at least a very long time ago in Gini’s sense of time, her owners Sarah and Max had gone on a trip. They said they would be back soon.
But one day passed. Then two.
A week passed. Then a month.
Gini stopped counting after a while. Counting days with paws was exhausting.
What had been winter slowly changed. The cold faded, and tiny buds began to appear on the trees. That was when Gini realized something was wrong. This was not a short trip.
One day, Gini noticed three windows in the building across from hers. She wondered if her owners might be there.
Her tail twitched with hope.
Clumsily, she ran along the railing, her heart pounding faster than her paws. In her haste, her foot slipped.
Gini fell from the third floor.
After some time, she slowly opened her eyes. Everything looked blurry, the world washed in pale gray. Then, through the haze, she heard voices.
“Hey, is that a cat?”
“It’s black. So cute.”
With the last bit of strength she had, Gini gently moved her tail. For the first time in a long while, she thought that she had not found her owners, but maybe the world was not such a bad place after all.
From that day on, Gini still looked out the window.
This time, her eyes were no longer frightening.
They were filled with quiet hope.
