about this story

With his saber pointed out to the wide expanse of the Atlantic Ocean, the Conquistador declared, "Every where I point to- this is the land I will reclaim for the Queen... por Dios."

My shadows cling like the legacies that will endure for centuries as these Indians will speak my language and their children carry my name (Cortes). The Conquistador pointed at la isla "Manhattan" with a conviction that spanned time and space.

As he reached the shore, he was greeted by the sounds of... rhythmic bachata drums, rock steady reggae, and hawkish Harlem hip hop.

His nostrils recoiled from the smell of New York City projects trash piled up like the cadavers of rotting Indios infected with Measles.

The projects building stood meager, modest, and homely in contrast to his sterling silver, piercing saber, and gaudy presence.

Senor Khan, the newly elected Mayor, greeted Cortes the Conquistador with a beaming smile unbeknownst to his colonial motives.

"My home is everyone's home. That's a nice costume. It's a little early for Halloween, but I respect the drip."

Khan, filled with the pride of a visitor from a far away land, brought Cortes to his newly created community garden.

"The inspiration came from Tupac's "The Rose That Grew from Concrete." The garden featured luminous lilacs, rich roses, and a myriad of fruit that could feed many families.

Cortes froze gazing at the garden, viewing this land with suspicion and confusion. In his mind, he viewed these people as dark magicians casting spells to conjure fruit from stones.

Noticing his trance, Khan patted Cortes on the shoulder and walked him over to the entrance of a cultural festival.

"Our strength here in this community is our diversity. We welcome people from all places."

Observing the festivities, Cortes gripped his saber closely, waiting for the ripe moment to strike. Instead, Khan offered him a plate of chicken biryani.

"Have a seat. The show is about to start." Cortes became entranced with the smell of pungent spices and sunk into his seat.

Khan's kindness won today's battle, but Cortes clung to his mission. Taking it all in, he closed his eyes and allowed himself to drift back in time seeking refuge for his lost soul.
