I had been out riding when I saw a man herding a flock of sheep across a far pasture. Two beautiful black and white dogs darted this way and that in response to his whistle. As I watched, man and dogs worked tirelessly to move the flock through a small gate into another field. When the last ewe scampered through, the dogs rounded up the sheep and took them over the hill.
I decided that I would like a dog like that. It was time to find one. When I got back to the stable, I told my trainer about what I had seen.
"Oh, that's John McDougall," she said. "His dogs have won national sheep herding trials. I believe one of his dams will be having a litter soon."
I got his address and stopped by his farm on my way home. I talked about getting one of his dogs. He was skeptical and said that if I came and trained with him, he would think about it.
Throughout the spring and into the fall, I learned how sheep move, how to position dogs to move the sheep, what the commands to use -- verbal and whistle.
The next spring, another one of Mr. McDougall's dams had a litter. On a day when the thistles were in bloom, he told me I was finally ready for a dog of my own.
