Spikes on a wrought iron gate; supposedly they're decorative, fancy finials, fleurs-de-lis, but Ray knows better. If you put your nose up against them they're cold and angry and they smell of blood; they're waiting to impale the heads of violators or the vanquished. That humpbacked piper on the craft museum sign isn't fooling anyone either; well yes he is actually, people eat him up, and no wonder given how they draw him nowadays. They've disguised his antennae as jaunty plumes; his scuttle as a step-ball-change; his privates, probing way out front, as nothing at all. Lore and legend, legend and lore.
Ray's better reconciled to the conquistador. The conquistador's bust, that is; the scowling, stiff, limbless conqtuistador with his curls carved out in serried rows, his collar like an air filter. (They hold the old one away fronm themselves, not getting it too close to their nose: here's your old one, sir, they say, wrinkling with distaste; we can replace it for you if you'd like.) The conquistador's is presumably clean and starched; in any case he, man and collar alike, is carved out of burled wood and mounted on a marble slab so we'll never know for sure.
The heat hits him hard once he leaves the museum. But there's fruit from a stand for lunch -- hard to object there, plants actually want you to eat fruit, so you can carry the pits far afield and sow them in your night-soil -- and Ray also buys some iced tea from a machine outside the police station, and it's blessedly cold. Then Ray flips open the sun-warmed latches of his enamel toolbox, soft under his fingernails, and gets ready to finish what he started.
