about this story

It was a warm afternoon at the local beach. The sun was still shining high enough, casting a warm glow across the sand. School had finished several hours earlier. This meant all the children from the area were happily running around laughing, sprinting in and out of the ocean, the cold waves lapping at their feet.
I sat alone on a nearby rock, watching the other children laugh on the sand and splash the sea water around. I felt sad. I wished I was over there with them, playing in the water, laughing, being friends. This wasn't possible for me. No one liked me, and I wasn't sure why.
As I sat watching them, I heard a rustling noise coming from near my foot. I looked down and saw something move slowly behind a rock. I held my breath. Whatever it was, I didn't want to scare it away. I sat perfectly still staring at the rock, willing for whatever was behind it to come out. Another rustle. Then... a lizard. A lizard slowly poked it's head around the rock and took a few steps forward. I exhaled in awe at the sight of the marvelous creature; its scaley skin were all kinds of green and blue, its long talons clawed at the ground, and its beady black eyes darted around nervously. Frightened of my sigh, it moved away quickly and disappeared under another nearby rock.
Alone again.
I sat on the rock and thought about what I'd just seen. The sun had started to dip behind the horizon, and the children on the beach were now packing up and leaving. I decided that I better head back home too.
Off I trudged, from the beach to the city, to the place full of people who didn't like me. I had an excited thought: perhaps if I returned to my spot the next day, the lizard will come out again. I smiled. I could catch the lizard and show it to the others. Maybe then they'd like me.
But as I pictured this I realised something. I realised that the lizard probably wanted to be left alone, and that perhaps being alone wasn't such a bad thing.
I smiled again.
