about this story

After living the city life for many years, it was time to find solace in the countryside. My wife and I moved to a small farmhouse forty-five minutes from the central portion of the metropolis. Behind our quaint abode, an endless expanse of hill country stretched across the horizon.

On a particular weekend, we decided to hike across the hills and find a serene place to escape the woes of the week. We departed on our journey before daybreak on that chilly Saturday. As the sun peaked over the hilltops, we paused for a meager breakfast beside a small stretch of flowers. The type of flower escapes me, but I will never forget the vibrant pink and yellow petals kissing the wind with their sweet aroma. Seeing clouds building in the west, we decided to pack up and move on.

Sure enough, the weather declined from a gorgeous September sunshine to a drenching rain that soaked us to the bone. We attempted to hide under trees with pale trumpeting flowers, but they offered no shelter. Fortunately, the rain passed, and we continued until we found the sunlight and a meadow nestled between two hills.

We decided to set up our camp in this valley and I began to gather wood for a fire. When I returned to my wife, I found her sharing a piece of bread with a ground squirrel who chose to make her acquaintance. Her little friend scurried away after seeing me approach the campsite.

We remained at the campsite for the rest of the evening. We shared a delicious meal of burnt hot dogs and s'mores while reminiscing over the previous excursions we'd taken. After a restful night's sleep, we packed our belongings and ventured back to our farm. It was a fabulous weekend.
