about this story

Grad school. I remember when I was finishing my Bachelors degree, I could not wait to be in grad school. I figured, then, I would start to be someone, do something, know something. Its sort of like an amusement park ride. You look forward to it for months.... anticipation, excitement, the unknown. The day finally arrives, you start a program - or in my case now my second program - and discover it is full of ups and downs, round and rounds, sometimes thrilling and sometimes nauseating.

The thing that really hits you however is just how quickly it flies by. Everything blurring at mach speed. Just when you think you might be getting to the end of the tunnel, a new thing, a change of plans and different direction approaches you almost faster than you can make a decision.

I have discovered that many grad students (and professors) drink excessively, I think it might be a prerequisite for academia. And I while I generally do not imbibe, I completely understand what might propel one in that direction. For me, I tend to fantasize about the day when I can take a deep breath and watch the clouds go by overhead. But at this point it almost seems like my odds of that are about as good as hitting the jackpot in Vegas. Maybe one day. School is like anything else in life, you have to play to win.
