about this story

John finally found it, a black vine, twisted around a forest tree. This was the sign he had been told to watch for if he was to escape his burden.

And here was the church he had to enter. Inside, he found an ornate shrine, framed by exotic carved panels.

As he approached the shrine, the church darkened. Heavy clouds were gathering, and the low rumble of distant thunder reached his ears.

On the altar he found a holy book and bowl of thick white curd with a single raspberry floating on the surface. Torn between hope and dread, John picked up the pewter spoon and tasted the intoxicating potion.

Stricken almost immediately, he stumbled out of the church and fell to the ground, his face hanging over the edge of a stagnant pond. As he lay retching, a baseball was tossed into the pond and he knew it was over. Another sign that John had lost big-time. He would never bet on the game again.
