Linda awoke late in Queens the morning of her first day on the new job in Manhattan. She threw herself together and jumped on her bike, having missed the train in Jamaica Plains. She was panting and dripping sweat by the time she arrived at the fancy patisserie on Madison Avenue. Upon entering the cafe, she saw swish ladies with Cancun tans leaning into each other at the round Parisian tables. That made her think suddenly of the lover she left behind ten years ago in Paris, the gal named Eugenie who brought Linda close to the precipice. She shook herself back to reality with the determination to make this the beginning of a new life—another spring, so different from the one along the quais in Paris.
