about this story

The more things change, the more they stay the same, it seems. Jonathan Butler had travelled vast distances to escape the memories of a life he had hoped to leave behind. Looking down from the hill overlooking Naples, his former seemed worlds away, yet that was to change very soon ...

The dawn broke icy cold in Berlin, July 1965. It had taken 15 years to disengage from war-torn Germany and, as disillusionment grew, the signs were ominous ... graffiti was echoing the sentiments thoughts of a nation that had found anger where there should have been healing. The bleak skyline etched the anger that Jonathan was leaving behind in haste ... his job was done, but the outcome had failed ... miserably. He knew the bounty on his head was being devised ... in the East and the West.

The sensation of burning jerked him back to the present ... how long had it been that he hadn't blinked? The tears roiling down his cheeks certainly were not from sorrow ... Jonathan Butler did not cry. His earliest childhood memories did not reveal any tears; not even when he had drowned his baby kitten; fully expecting it to come magically back to life

He rubbed his eyes and leaned forward to the telescope. He again focused on the man seated at the table oin the sidewalk cafe. The outline of the man seemed vaguely familiar, but he was not prepared for the shock he felt when the stranger turned in his chair ... the icy cold eye, instantly recognizable, shrinking the distance between them. Herbert von Strangway had found him.
