"You know who wrote about a cat? Edgar Allen Poe, the famous writer of short horror stories. It might not surprise you, though, that he wrote about black cats. And their lives usually ended in sad ways."
"Poe didn't just write horror, he also wrote adventure stories, mysteries, stories about sailing and flying, and a ton of poetry."
"Most of Poe's work, though, was very dark and sad. This could be because Poe didn't have the happiest childhood. He was orphaned at a very young age, and raised by a relative who didn't really like him."
"Poe struggled with gambling and drinking, and his wife Virginia's death sent him into an emotional tailspin. Virginia was Poe's cousin, and 13 years younger than him."
"Poe would later die in Baltimore, maybe from rabies, maybe from alcohol poisoning, maybe just from poison. Either way, Poe is remembered as one of America's greatest, and most tragic, authors."
