She was sitting in her writing arts class listening to the classes poems and told me this. "Why do I even bother trying anymore? Every poem and essay I write gets worse and worse while everyone else’s are leagues better than mine. I honestly am about to give up on this dream. I’ll never be a writer." I then told her, “That isn’t true I though your poem was great.” She then exclaimed, “stop lying to me yours was way better and you know it. There is no way I’m going to sell anything if I can barely write a poem never less a book, I might just drop my major. As it stands, I’ll just be that sorry sole looking for food in dumpsters for the rest of my life.” I then told her, “you don’t have to be the absolute best at everything, and your poem was just different from the rest. You don’t need to be the same as everyone else. If you want to be successful you must be unique and different, and you are already doing that. Don’t doubt yourself and keep trying until you figure out what color your mark is. It could be blue or red or white or even all three. It just doesn’t matter what your mark is. All you need to do is strive for it and perfect it in your way.” She then said, “well damn, I guess I never thought of it like that, I guess it isn't so bad after all.”
