about this story

James is looking for another sign. A sign to say that he is on the right track. A sign to to tell him that he finally made it all the way back. He has been driving for what feels like weeks, rushing cross-country all the way back to his childhood home. He kept thinking about the phone call. It didn't make sense. She has been gone for so long, 15 years long. But that didn't stop her from giving him a sign that she was still alive, and that he had to come find her.
He saw through his windshield that he had finally arrived at his destination. He is now one right turn away from finding all of his answers. The giant red dot on the map that every sign he saw has told him to go for the past 15 years. James made the turn, and drove 2 more miles down the road to arrive at an old abandoned fairground. "Yes, this is it" he thinks to himself. He gets out of the car and hops the fence to enter the old fair. Following a path laid out for him, a path he wasn't even sure was the right one to follow, he came across another sign. At the center of the old carousel embedded in the pillar was a green door marked with the number "13". That feeling of falling through the world came back once again. This is where she disappeared. James recalled the memory of him watching his little sister, Lily, on the carousel when he was only 13 years old. He got distracted for a moment too long and found that his sister had hopped off the horse and ran into that green door embedded in the middle pillar. The door closed behind her and never opened again. But now, here he was. James opened the door, not expecting it to open. He gave it a couple hard tugs and it blew itself out of the seams and knocked him on the ground. After James collected himself, he found himself looking at a hole right where the door was. James knew this was uncanny, it doesn't make sense for a hole to be there, although it plainly was. James decided he was going to see it through. If Lily was on the other side of this hole, he would hate himself if he refused to climb through just for his lack of understanding the physics behind the situation. He braced himself and made his way through. Crawling for about 15 seconds, he felt the tunnel grow wider and deeper. Before he could even comprehend this unnatural feeling, the scene shifted all too suddenly. He was out in the middle of nowhere at a crossroads, standing next to a pay phone. It rings. James picked it up. "Lily?" he asks. "You found me James. Turn around." James, who wondered for half of his life where his sister had gone, slowly turned around to find his eyes widen, face quiver in fear, and his arms involuntarily rise to fruitlessly prevent what he knew what was bound to happen next.
