about this story

As I started to think of a title, the first thing that came to mind as I was selecting the photos was the different stages of my life. The following lyrics to J. Cole's song, " My life" came to mind:

“My life is all I have
My rhymes, my pen, my pad
And I done made it out the struggle, don't judge me
What you sayin' now won't budge me
'Cause where I come from (Come from), so often (So often)
People you grow up with layin' in a coffin
But I done made it through the pain and strife
It's my time now, my world, my life, my life”
~J. Cole

I grew up in what most people know as "Amish Country", Lancaster. PA. However, the city part of Lancaster is very urban and populated with low-income minorities. My high school is roughly 80% non-White. So, while most folks see PICTURE #1 when they hear Lancaster, I see PICTURE #2. I am a child of the 80s and the hip-hop culture. Rap and dance battles took place along graffiti-lined alleyways. In elementary school, we practiced our signatures, or tags, as they are known. I expressed myself and my emotions through writing poems and eventually raps. In college, I was in a rap group. I performed locally and even won a rap battle on the radio!

PICTURE #3: The beach or really any body of water is my refuge. I love to just sit and look at the waves. I am so excited about this summer season and relaxing as much as possible before the busyness of next school year begins.

PICTURE #4: As a Black woman, my identity s a big part of who I am. I learned to embrace this early due to unfortunate encounters and have always made it a point to engage and celebrate however I could. As a student at the VCU School of Social Work, I was a member of the National Association of Black Social Work student chapter. I held national offices and still am a participant of the Richmond graduate chapter.

PICTURE #5: This will be me this next year...sipping my tea and minding my businses. I am ready to focus on this capstone project along with some professional development opportunities as work and I forge a path to my next chapter.

“My life is all I have
My rhymes, my pen, my pad
And I done made it out the struggle, don't judge me
What you sayin' now won't budge me
'Cause where I come from (Come from), so often (So often)
People you grow up with layin' in a coffin
But I done made it through the pain and strife
It's my time now, my world, my life, my life”
~J. Cole
