about this story

White clover, my mother’s favorite. It overflows, creating an eerie cloud of white in which her grave stone sits upon. Lichen creeps into every crack and crevice on the cold granite. Not even one tree bud has started to grow, yet my mother’s white clover infiltrates the land. As the clouds start to darken, I trek through the field of dead grass and dry dirt. Oh of course my mother’s persistence would influence the spring's first show. I reach the heavy, iron gate. I look back to see the almost barren land before me. Somehow, even in death, my mother can’t realize she is not the star of the show. I close the cemetery gate with the loud scrape of its hinges.
My footsteps click with each step upon the broken cement. I finally make it back home just before the thunder starts to shake. Before I know it tears are rolling down my face. I look out the window into the rain, a mirror image of myself. I think to myself “How can I hate someone so much, yet love them so dearly”. I made the little scone sandwiches my mother loved to make. They now sit stale on the counter, like the love I feel for her. Persistent, is my mother and this love. Yet I will never be able to throw it away. I cry myself to sleep, wishing she would have changed before it was too late.
