Charlie had no car but was determined to visit his grandmother, who lived two towns over from his home in rural Turnerville. His grandmother lived in an urban town, in a nursing home. Charlie had not seen her in 5 years. He decided he would not let distance and a lack of a car stop him from seeing his grandmother.
Charlie began his journey back walking; he made it 10 miles into the city, passing signs and buildings. It was perilous, but Charlie stuck out his thumb and hitched a ride to the next town. Charlie knew the manager of the local YMCA, so he stopped by to use the restroom and get a cold drink of water. A group from the YMCA was traveling to the town where his grandmother's nursing home could be found. The manager offered him a ride in their school bus-turned-YMCA vehicle. At first, Charlie was prideful and said no. But upon his friend's insistence, he took the ride.
Charlie made it to the Sunny Meadows, his grandmother's nursing home. He stopped at the desk and asked for her room. He walked down the hall, smelling antiseptic, pine sol, and some other scents you notice at a nursing home.
When he arrived at his grandmother's room, she watched television in a chair. When Charlie entered the room, her eyes widened, and her mouth lifted into the most beautiful smile. His grandmother's smile made the entire journey worthwhile.
