Her history course had brought her here. As she roamed the city, she peered at the statues and looked up at the structures, she could not help but wonder about the connectedness of it all. Where did it start and where did it end? It was the capital of the Confederacy...revered, and respected, but yet with the taint of a very ugly history and a not-so-nice story to tell.
Just like the city, everyone at the bus stop has a story to tell, especially the person at the stop who does not realize they are a direct descendent of the man on the horse and a distant relative of the individual under the first white headstone. She scribbled some notes in her journal and realized, the truth is, that we are all connected, living and dead, including those who have been relegated to a home behind the wires locked away in a concrete and brick building at the bottom of a Richmond hill.
None of us can ever know the depth of the connectedness, especially when that connectedness often presents itself as a stranger. We often do not realize we are the same in so many ways with so many parallel experiences. It is the connections that keep us alive. But she also considered that perhaps it is those connections that have us doomed to repeat the same cycle as the man on the horse and perhaps even those marked by the white stones. Perhaps it is those connections that will actually set us free.
