I wanted to help - in a tangible way. The organizers of the protests asked for cyclists and extra waters via instagram. There had been rumors that their supply of waters had been tainted by people the All Lives Matter groups. I saw the post and stocked up on as many water bottles as I could carry.
I biked my way to the starting point of the march, at VCU's campus right outside the School of Social Work. I was greeted by police. The mood was tense and the march hadn't even started yet. The plan was to march to the capitol, to shut down streets on our way, to make people uncomfortable in hopes that they would actually pay attention.
We marched with signs, with chants, with walkers, motorcyclists and bikers. I handed out waters and sunscreen and echoed the chants of the protest leaders. I used my bike to block cars and to protect my group. I was there alone, and yet had never felt so connected to others.
We made it to the capitol and it sounded like they heard us. The statues were removed, but the ideas they represented remain.
