about this story

Olivia was so excited to start her new restaurant. She found the perfect little hole in the wall in downtown where she could provide limited seating, counter service, and a very authentic Tex-Mex atmosphere. The trouble, as with all new restaurants, was driving traffic to her place. Being a hole in the wall, it wasn't readily visible to passersby. Being new, there wasn't a whole lot of word of mouth driving people to her door. After 4 months, she decided to close and re-strategize her restaurant. While visiting her grandmother, they were sitting on the back patio and Olivia fell in love with the brick herring bone patio. With that one moment of inspiration, she realized her restaurant was being strangled by the four walls of her little operation. So, she decided to try something new. She contacted the city about renting a promenade in the park that had a unique, yet similar, brick patio. Armed with the proper permits and permissions, she began creating silly marketing campaigns that she could print on stickers, t-shirts, and totes. Before re-opening, she launched a gorilla marketing campaign by having these items sold by local, independent boutiques and bookstores in town. With her restaurants contact information and faded graphics, the merchandise gave her restaurant credibility and made it appear to have been a long-lost local favorite. After 6 months of this marketing, she took out ads on social media, Google, and the news announcing the grand return of Oli's Tacos and Tequila as a semi-permanent food truck in the park. Fast forward 2 years and her operation is a huge success and has revitalized the park as a public gathering place. People plan festivals, family get togethers, and local musical perfomances around her schedule. She was even able to keep the brick and mortar store as a catering kitchen for additional revenue. Olivia was credited as a major influence in bringing people back into the downtown area for leisure and dining as more restaurants and boutiques sprung up around the edges of the park. But none of them were able to achieve the local heritage and tradition of Oli's Tacos.
