Five Card Story: Shifting Seasons

about this story
The mural of the red cardinal shows Virginia’s proud state bird. Even when in another state, it felt like home was watching over me. In my second year of an Ed.D. program and deep into my role in Residence Life, I am navigating student crises by day and APA citations by night.
Sometimes, it all feels like too much. That’s when the universe will send me a sign. The stop sign at the corner of a campus road reminded me to pause. To breathe. I am not just here to push through the work, I am here to grow through it.
When fall settles in, the brick pathways began to collect leaves. Their soft rustle underfoot take me back to being home with my family. They remind me of why I chose this path: to build belonging for students who need it, like I once did.
There is a single leaf, glossy and imperfect, mirrored my own experience. It is vibrant but marked. Between school, work, and trying to maintain my peace, I am not flawless. But I am growing.
Evenings often ended with a glance toward the power lines against the colored sunset. The wires stretched far, just like my ambitions. I am tired but grounded. I carry my roots with me, even as I reach for something bigger.
