about this story

On a cool fall afternoon, Peter Praying Mantis stepped off of the tree trunk and started wandering. Peter was the type of Praying Mantis who enjoyed the quiet life. He started off looking for a bit of food, but he found a big adventure instead.

Suddenly he turned a corner and was swept up into a crowd. He rode on a shiny brown patent leather shoe for awhile. At a bus stop he hopped off and was nearly stepped on.

"I better get back on a tree before I get smashed!" exclaimed Peter.

Peter found a nice earthy spot with a small tree growing. But, that was no tree it was a person practicing a yoga pose in the park. When the person moved to see the traditional Native American dancers, Peter went with them.

Peter climbed higher and higher to the person's shoulder so he could see the dancers better. At that moment an entomologist spotted Peter.

"What a fine specimen of Praying Mantis!" the entomologist whispered to himself.

The entomologist quickly and quietly pulled out his camera. And took a picture of Peter. The entomologist scooped up Peter into a bug box and carefully took Peter back to the lab.

The entomologist discovered that Peter was an unknown type of Praying Mantis. He wrote all about Peter in "American Entomologist" and, of course, included the picture he had taken of Peter.

Who knew that a search for food could turn into a walk of fame?
