Heavy footsteps muffled by age-worn carpet sounded down the hallway. The faces of laughing cherubs and devilish imps were stepped on one by one. Abruptly the footsteps stopped outside the entrance to the secret room. The Princess trembled, but awaited her fate stoically. She imagined she would soon be seeing the gabled roof of the heavenly realm. The door creaked open and two large retainers dressed in black and white entered the room. The Princess relaxed immediately. Perhaps there was hope after all.
