about this story

The bark of the redwood trees are stronger than any other. Their bark can withstand any forest fires, some grow as thick as the length of my fist. I know because Nana used to tell me so in her many stories about the Great Redwoods in California. My Nana had quite a legacy here, though only the locals know it. They say my great grandpa and her helped establish and protect Sequoia National Park when it was endangered. But in her retirement, she started a Bakery selling the most beautifully decorated cakes. Her cinnamon rolls were divine. Now, the Sequoia Bakery belongs to me. Momma says it should have been my sisters, but Nana insisted it would be mine in her will. I wish she wouldn't have. I may have helped her bake in the past, but I fear I will never live up to her delectable sweets. I tear my eyes away from the truck delivering ingredients for the food I'm expected to make today. The package in my hands was delivered shortly after Nana's passing. I open it carefully, anxious to see what's inside. Most is what you'd expect. Her apron, chef hat, and tools are folded and placed neatly within the box. Lifting them over to the kitchen, I see a small object fall onto the floor. It is a pine cone. One that has fallen from a Redwood tree. I know it is illegal to take any droppings from the trees in the park, Nana has told me many times before. I pick it up, and find a small note attached to the seed. It read, "To remind you that all great beginnings start small. Don't tell your mother!" I laugh and slip the token of advice into Nana's apron pocket. The church bells have started to ring, marking the hour. Time to start cooking.
